Borehole pump keeps tripping: control and protection faults

Troubleshooting · Kenya

This guide helps you plan troubleshooting for a Kenyan borehole project. Use the questions below to compare proposals, collect the right site information and decide what to request before committing to equipment or work.

Record the protection message

A trip is evidence that a protection or control condition needs attention. Record the exact display message or indicator pattern and the time it occurs. Do not bypass protective devices or increase settings to keep the pump running. Use the installed isolation procedure and have the electrical system assessed by a suitably qualified person.

Identify when the trip happens

A fault at startup may need a different investigation from a trip after prolonged pumping. Tell the technician about supply changes, generator use, weather events and recent repairs. The operating timeline can help narrow the investigation to supply, controls, motor, cable or source-water conditions.

Test the system rather than guessing at parts

The technician may need to compare measurements with the selected motor and controller documentation. Cable condition, connections, supply quality and mechanical load all deserve consideration where relevant. A replacement controller should be selected only after the cause and compatibility requirements are understood.

Recommission after corrective work

Confirm the protection settings and demonstrate the intended response to normal controls and relevant fault conditions. Retain the measured results and corrected settings. If the same trip returns, provide that record at the next visit. Repeated component swaps without a diagnosis can increase cost while leaving the source of failure in place.

Your enquiry checklist

  • Exact fault code
  • Startup or running trip timing
  • Motor rating and supply type
  • History of storms, generator use or repairs

Send these details with your Kenyan site location. If a report or measurement is unavailable, say so in the enquiry so the missing assessment can be included in the scope.
